Part 1 of the standard EN 54 is the introductory standard and definition of fire detection and alarm systems installed in buildings, which have several components that communicate for the purpose of:
• Detect a fire as soon as possible.
• Provide an audible and / or visible signal to protect occupants.
• Provide alarm information remotely to organizations authorized for the protection of buildings and their environment.
• Provide signals to initiate, in the event of a fire, the operations of other equipment and protection systems.
The performance of the components is assessed through specific tests defined in each of the parts of the EN54 series, but, on their own, each of them does not guarantee the correct operation of the set. For this it is necessary to jointly evaluate the systems in accordance with EN54-13.
This new edition includes new terms or revises and corrects existing ones with the intention of updating and unifying their meaning throughout the entire regulatory series. New definitions include descriptions of distributed control and indication equipment, ECI, and voice alarm control and indication equipment.
The standard thus includes in its definition and in a more explicit way, on the one hand, the alarm systems by voice and on the other hand enters to define a distributed control equipment and contrasts it to a hierarchical or networked system. .
