New vehicle CO2 tax

At the beginning of the month, the Generalitat published the final list of vehicles that will have to pay for it, showing the quota of each vehicle. The consultation must be made by the owner. The CO2 emission contained therein must match that which appears on the vehicle's data sheet.

From now on, payment can be made through the electronic office of the Tax Agency of Catalonia (ATC). If you do not choose to make the payment through the electronic office, from October you will receive a notification with the amount and payment deadlines.

Payment can be made by direct debit, which will be annual, by calling 012, to the collaborating financial institutions or to the post offices by post.

A green tax

  It is a green tax, aligned with environmental taxation that is promoted from Europe as an essential tool in the face of the environmental crisis and climate emergency.

The tax applies to cars, vans and motorcycles on the basis of CO2 emissions in 2020. It has a finalist character, because the collection goes entirely to the Climate Fund and the Natural Heritage Fund. The investments will aim to improve the environment and public transport, promote renewable energy and clean vehicles, and promote sustainable mobility, natural park management and research.

The tax must be paid by people (natural and legal) who own a vehicle (car, van or motorcycle) with a tax domicile in Catalonia in 2020.

Legal entities without tax residence in Catalonia, but who have an establishment, branch or office and vehicles registered in Catalonia during 2020, are also obliged to do so.

In the first year of application of the tax, which corresponds to the year 2020, all cars and motorcycles that emit less than 120 g of CO2 / km and vans that emit less than 160 will be exempt from paying it. g / km, according to the official emissions of each model.

Based on these emission levels, an installment fee must be paid in installments , which can be calculated on the ACT website . They range from 0.55 to 276 euros for cars and motorcycles, and from 0.30 to 87 euros for vans. The ACT also offers an emissions simulator.

They are exempt from taxing 100% electric vehicles, mopeds, trucks or vehicles over 3.5 tons, coaches and vehicles authorized to carry more than 9 people, including the driver. So are those with historic vehicle license plates and classic vehicles.
