Volt 5: “Territories Defending Life: Climate Justice and Fair Transitions”

ENGINEERS WITHOUT BORDERS

The Volt is an initiative of the Network for Energy Sovereignty and this will be the 5th edition, after 8 years of the first Volt. This activity is both an experience and a tool, inspired by the toxic tours of Latin America: caravans of activists moving through the territory.

The toxic tours value the solidarity and mutual support between the struggles in defense of the territories, which resist the impacts of the fossil energy model, extractivist, ecocide, based on profit and commodification, which leaves in its wake environmental devastation, loss of biodiversity, degradation of the living conditions and livelihoods of its inhabitants, denial of political rights and participation and strengthens the rest of the chains of patriarchal, racist, colonial and class oppression.

It is a tour, a bus journey that goes through and stops at various stops where visits and discoveries, talks, actions, etc. are organized. from the hand of the platforms rooted in the territory. Thus, it seeks to make visible local resistance movements and possible alternatives, as well as amplify and connect voices and struggles that unite in the defense of life and climate justice, in solidarity with other territories of the Global South.

Last but not least, it is a space for networking, discovery and collective celebration. This year the Volt will begin in the city of Barcelona and will cover the following places in Catalan geography:

Saturday, June 4

We will visit the Terra Alta, in this stop we will know the long trajectory of struggles of the Terres de l'Ebre, especially against the massive implantations of different technologies of electrical generation (hydroelectric, nuclear, wind) and in defense of the river like articulator of the life and territory.

We will also visit the region of Lower Aragon to share with local platforms and movements against the current model of energy transition, where we will spend the first night.

Sunday, June 5th

In the morning we will do a guided tour with the platforms and movements of the Matarranya to make visible and denounce the impacts that will have the implementation of the megaprojects renewable in the territory.

Next, we will go to the Alt Camp to make visible the impacts of the large energy transport infrastructures on the territory. What would the implementation of the new Very High Voltage (MAT) lines entail?

Monday 6 (holiday) June

Finally, we will hold a meeting of Popular Energy Communities in Central Catalonia to share proposals, synergies and strategies.
