March 8, working women's day

Name and surname: Alicia Zaera Hormigos

Age: 45 years

Job: Industrial Engineer

Today, Working Women's Day is celebrated. We know you are a mother of four. How do you balance work with your personal life?

Although it can seem very difficult to reconcile personal and work life in a family of six, the fact of organizing school schedules and activities well, as well as having a calendar where everything is recorded, has helped me to reconcile - everything and being able to enjoy my work and my family.

It also helps to keep in mind that any unforeseen event can completely change your forecast for the day, so you must be constantly prepared to be able to resolve these situations.

Since 2019, you have your own engineering company. What exactly do you do?

I am dedicated to carrying out projects focused on industrial safety facilities, such as pressure equipment installations, certification of safety system installations at heights and chemical storage facilities others. I also carry out the regulatory inspections that apply to each type of facility.

How do you see the profession, currently?

From my point of view, I think that there is currently quite a bit of movement, although we come from a rather complicated situation, we have been working at a very good pace for a year and it seems that companies are investing more and more in security.

Do you think there is more and more space for women? Or is it still a predominantly male profession?

I think yes, that there is more and more space for women in our profession, but not as much as I would like. I consider that it is still a predominantly male profession since in the industrial sector you still find a greater number of male engineers than female engineers. However, I must say that in my professional experience I have never received any difference in treatment because of being a woman.

Is the work that engineers do well enough known?

Within the industrial world, the jobs to be performed by engineering are well known by the different departments of the companies, but when you leave this sector, it is very common for people to ask you what exactly you do. In other words, if you are not linked to the industry, it is difficult to know how it works, and what role we engineers play in it.

Why do you think it is important to be collegial, considering that you work as a freelancer?

For me it is important to be collegiate in order to carry out my profession. Having the support of the college and having the services it offers keeps me updated and linked to the rest of the members.
